The registration process

Four steps to registering an imported car

1

Originality inspection

Verification of the vehicle identifiers (VIN, plates) and documents at the technical inspection station.

2

Technical inspection

If the register requires it — especially for a vehicle without a valid inspection from the country of origin.

3

Compulsory insurance

You take out motor liability insurance before registration — without it the vehicle will not be entered in the register.

4

Registration at the vehicle register

The fees according to the calculator are paid, and the registration certificate and number plates are issued.

Frequently asked questions

How much does registering an imported car cost in 2026?

The administrative fee for entering a passenger car in the road vehicle register is 800 Kč. If an EL registration plate is assigned at the same time (electric car, hydrogen, plug-in hybrid up to 50 g CO₂/km), no fee is paid. For an imported car with Euro 2 or older, an emission fee of 3 000 to 10 000 Kč is also payable; Euro 3 and newer are exempt from the emission fee.

What is the emission fee (formerly the “eco tax”)?

The emission fee under Act No. 542/2020 Coll. is paid for passenger cars (M1) and light commercial vehicles (N1) on first registration in the Czech Republic and on a change of owner or keeper. Amount: Euro 2 — 3 000 Kč, Euro 1 — 5 000 Kč, Euro 0 or no standard — 10 000 Kč. It is paid only once per vehicle: if it has already been paid (or the earlier eco fee under the Waste Act), it is not paid again. Exemptions are set out in § 115 of the Act.

Is a fee payable for an electric car?

If an electric car (or a hydrogen car or a plug-in hybrid up to 50 g CO₂/km) is assigned an EL registration plate at the same time as registration, no administrative fee is paid. When transferring a vehicle that already has an EL plate, the usual 800 Kč is paid. The emission fee does not apply to electric cars.

Where can I find the vehicle's emission standard?

In the registration certificate (vehicle documents), in the COC certificate or in the manufacturer's data. If you don't know the standard, the calculator estimates it from the date of first registration — but the figure in the vehicle documents is decisive.

What else needs to be paid?

The registration check at a technical inspection station (price according to the station's price list), for an imported car possibly a technical inspection, compulsory motor liability insurance and, when transferring the vehicle, possibly temporary transfer plates. The calculator does not include these items.

Is Czech VAT payable when importing a used car from Germany?

For a used car bought from an EU dealer under the special scheme (margin taxation), Czech VAT usually does not arise. However, a car less than six months old or with up to 6 000 km is considered a new means of transport and VAT on it is paid in the Czech Republic.

Turnkey import and registration

We find the car, check it, import it from Germany and hand it over with a Czech registration certificate in your name.
