Used car leasing conditions for private individuals — what to watch out for

You can lease a used car too — but some conditions differ from those for a new car. We go through what the lender asks for and what to watch out for.

In brief

Used car leasing is perfectly common for private individuals — the conditions are largely the same as for a new car (proven income, documents, credit register status, down payment), with one important difference: lenders typically set an upper age limit on how old the car may be at the end of the term. You can calculate the estimated monthly instalment with the leasing calculator; we cover the basics of leasing in our car leasing guide.

Many people think you can only lease a new car — yet used car leasing is one of the most popular forms of financing. In this article we look at the conditions for leasing a used car as a private individual, and how they differ from those for a new car.

The conditions: what does the lender ask for?

Most conditions are the same as for any lease:

  • an adult natural person with permanent residence in the Czech Republic;
  • verifiable, regular income;
  • valid identity documents and address card;
  • a clean record in the debtor registers;
  • an available down payment (typically 10–50% of the purchase price).

The main difference: the car's age

For used cars, lenders typically set an upper age limit on how old the car may be at the end of the term. So the older the car, the shorter the term you can choose. The exact limit varies from lender to lender — we will help you find the scheme that works for your particular car.

How does it differ from leasing a new car?

How much down payment do you need, and what will the instalment be?

The down payment here is also usually 10–50 % of the purchase price; the higher it is, the lower the monthly instalment. The instalment is determined jointly by the purchase price, down payment, repayment period and residual value. The partner leasing company itself will prepare an indicative instalment for you on request.

Leasing a used electric car

With a used electric car there is one more aspect: the battery condition (State of Health), because it determines the real range and the residual value. We wrote about this and about subsidies in detail in our article on electric car leasing.

What to check before buying

Since the leased asset is a used car, its condition is key — a good purchase is in both your and the lender's interest. Go through our 10-point checklist before you decide. For imports from Germany, we inspect every car on site.

FAQ

How old can a leased car be?

Lenders set an upper age limit for the end of the term, so for older cars a shorter term is available. The exact limit depends on the scheme — we will check it for your particular car.

Do I need a down payment to lease a used car?

Typically yes, 10–50% of the purchase price. A larger down payment means a lower monthly instalment; we cover 0% down payment options in our car leasing article.

Can an imported used car be leased?

Yes. A vetted car imported from Germany can be financed just like a domestic one — as a private individual or as a company.

How long does the leasing assessment take?

Typically a few working days after the complete documentation has been received; the exact time is determined by the financing partner.
